Deool (2011) Xvid MP3 Dvdrip |
Shirin Mehrotra attends the ongoing MAMI and comes away being completely impressed by the exhibits on display. One of them is Deool – a complete must-watch.

Writer: Girish Kulkarni

Marathi cinema is several notches ahead of mainstream Bollywood. This has been proved time and again with films like Shwaas, Dombivali Fast, Harishchandrachi Factory and Natrang. Deool, which premiered on the second day of Mumbai Film Festival, can easily be listed in the same category.
The story is of a simple village youth called Kesha (Girish Kulkarni) who has a vision of Datta (God) under a tree. What follows is how the local netas publicise this for their own political benefits. A temple is built instead of a hospital. The village becomes a pilgrimage centre and gets crowded and dirty. The temple’s committee starts raking in money from the devotees and splurges on alcohol and celebrity dance shows. All this disheartens Anna (Dilip Prabhawalkar), an elderly man who wants some real development in the village. Roads are built, water and electricity are provided but with it comes the commercialisation of God. Development happens – but at what cost?
The film highlights an issue which we all are aware of but tend to ignore. Religion in India has turned into a business and its no more about beliefs and finding our inner peace. It also tries to break the village stereotypes and cliches: the village women are not shy and meek housewives anymore; they know what they want and that’s evident in the sexual tension between the lead characters. The crude Marathi humour adds to the script. Item numbers are in a perfect tune with the story and highlight how small-time television celebrities have taken over Lavni performances in villages, so much so that the local artists have given up on folk music for the more ‘in’ Bollywood numbers.
Girish Kulkarni does a splendid job and the audience can see the pain of being cheated in his eyes. Nana Patekar shines through the movie as a politician who is stuck in a dilemma between doing what is right and protecting his political career. Sonali Kulkarni stands out as his wife who has a sole ambition of seeing Datta herself.
Deool, which means ‘temple’ in Marathi, is shot in a small village in Maharashtra and aptly depicts how life there is affected by the urban culture. The camerawork is beautiful and pans through the greenery as well as the barren lands. Although the editing finished at 5.00pm for the 5.30pm screening, there were no hasty or abrupt cuts. However, it could have been a bit shorter. Umesh Kulkarni who has made films like Vihir and Gaarud has added one more feather to his cap with this one.
Deool is slated to release on November 4 in Mumbai theatres.
